Books for Kenya Project

Muru Primary School with their text books
Students from the Muruai Primary School in Kenya, Africa enjoy the books they received from schools in Maine, U.S.A.

The Books for Kenya project collects discarded text books from schools and organizations in Maine. The text books are either packaged and shipped to Kenyan schools and libraries or sold to raise money to buy Kenyan curriculum.

Proceeds from the sale of these books will be used to buy curriculum texts in Kenya.

In 1998, the first Books for Kenya event took place and over 6,000 pounds of used textbooks were shipped to 36 schools in Kenya. High school students and community members gathered on October 24, 1998, Make a Difference Day, to pack, label, and transport the books for shipping to the schools. Private donations funded the shipping costs. Disposable cameras were placed in two of the boxes so the receiving schools could photograph their receipt of the books. Many schools sent letters of thank you and the two schools that received the cameras, Muruai Primary School and Tengecha Boys Secondary School, sent photographs of their receipt of the books.
