Friends Across the Ocean

There are three parts to Friends Across the Ocean: a Travel Course for Students, a Travel Course for Adults, and the Pen Pal Project.

The Travel Course for Students is designed for high school students. Its aim is to develop cultural awareness and foster friendships between US and African students through an immersion experience. US students safari to Kenya, Africa and
  • Attend school with Kenyan teachers and students;
  • Eat Kenyan food in the school cafeteria and village homes;
  • Camp on Kenyan school grounds;
  • Participate in village activities;
  • Explore the beautiful Kenyan countryside.
The Travel Course for Students is led by a veteran educator and traveler. The travel arrangements and itinerary are handled by Expanding Opportunities. Each Travel Course for Students is scheduled through a supporting school district. Funds are raised to pay for the course through student/school organized fund-raising activities. Interested students or teachers should contact Expanding Opportunities for Project information. Only trips planned directly through a supporting school qualify as Travel Courses.

If you're interested in having an intimate look at east African culture while also sharing your skills, consider doing one of Expanding Opportunities' service journeys. Service journey volunteers live at the Joseph Waweru Home School--a home for street boys--in Menengai, Kenya. Volunteers get to be part of a Kenyan family and experience first-hand what the country is about. During the day, volunteers work in the home school's gardens, at local schools and around the house. In the evenings, volunteers eat dinner and hang out with the street kids, joking around, helping with homework and discussing cultural differences. If you have specific skills that you'd like to share, Expanding Opportunities will help you find a way to do so.

Service journeys can take place anytime between early January and early April, precise dates varying from year to year. The journeys can be from two weeks to three months long. Limited long term volunteering positions are also available.

The Pen Pal Project pairs African students with US students so they may exchange letters. Individual students, classrooms or entire schools may participate. Interested students or teachers should contact Expanding Opportunities for Project information.
