Projects
Friends Across the Ocean
Developing cultural awareness and fostering friendships. The Student and Adult Travel Courses are designed to assist U.S. students and adults in traveling to Kenya to gain first-hand experience of life in this developing country. Street Children Fund
Providing food, shelter and education to homeless children. The Street Children Fund has three major branches: an informal feeding program; a children's home, the Joseph Waweru Home School. These children receive food, shelter, clothing, medical care and adult role models. They attend school and learn life skills; and an Orphans At Home project where orphans are cared for in their family home Many, many more children need assistance.
Artisan Support: Aina Moja
Selling African crafts and art to support African artists. Aina Moja, www.ainamoja.com, is a business venture developed as a means to assist the mission of Expanding Opportunities through the sale of African crafts and artwork created by African artisans. Sale of these items supports the struggling artists of Kenya, Africa. The word Aina Moja is Kiswahili and means "one of a kind". Each item is hand crafted and therefore one of a kind.The Artisan Support Project also manages 1st African Clothing, www.1stafricanclothing.com, and KangaUSA, www.kangausa.com. The Artisan support project also branches into Peru and lists the items of www.peruartandcrafts.com on Aina Moja.
Distance Learning Centers
Bringing Distance Education to rural areas. Distance Learning Centers endeavor to establish small learning centers in rural communities. These small centers would be either on grid, solar or wind powered, satellite linked learning centers to provide small community centers for educational purposes including the establishment of a small community library for use by rural schools and community members, basic literacy classes, vocational courses, information distribution, internet access and post secondary education via university distance learning. Expanding Opportunities has joined the efforts of the Rabondo Community Project to establish the first Distance Learning Center in rural Rabondo, Kenya. STEMS
Success Through Educaton, Money and Support STEMS is a small loan project designed to assist struggling business entrepreneurs in Kenya, Africa. STEMS is also an avenue to fund School Fees for selected students.
Books for Kenya
Enhancing educational materials in Kenyan schools. The Books for Kenya project raises funds and collects used textbooks from schools in the U.S. Some of the used books are carried or shipped to Kenya and some are sold. The funds raised for this project are used to pay shipping costs or purchase books and supplies in Kenya .
Camp Forest
Maine camp to teach wilderness skills and appreciation. Camp Forest is a day and expedition camp in Brooks, Maine for children 7-17 years of age. Its goal is to preserve, teach, and honor primitive and wilderness living skills from around the world.
